Based out of Wellington, New Zealand, Shaun Gardiner is a lighting and sound technician who has experienced and worked in the music and theatre industries in Wellington. At 22 years old and a Massey University Graduate, having completed a Bachelor of Commercial Music Technology, he’s worked at large scale music gigs such as CubaDupa and operated lighting and sound for award-winning theatre and late drag queen Pamela Hancock. His experience within the different industries, alongside his three year’s experience studying, have dramatically improved his skills and creativity since his first shows at Onslow College in 2015 where he operated lights for his drama class. In addition to his lighting and sound skills, Shaun also has experience within the photography and video editing fields, building on his knowledge and skills both within and outside of his study.

Over the course of 2021, Shaun worked on a research project labelled ‘a-SHOE-stics’, a study into the sonic acoustics of materials on modern performance basketball shoes and their practicality as an unconventional recording technique. By placing the shoes over the top of a microphone like a filter, sound travels through the materials on the shoes and subsequently affects the frequencies coming through. Based on the findings, a conclusion on the sonic characteristics can be made for the different shoes and their materials. You can view this research project here

Additionally, Shaun has been making a name for himself in the New Zealand Ultimate Frisbee community, having been nominated for “Upcoming Player of the Year" for 2020 and being called up to the NZ Under 24 Men’s and Mixed Training Squads for 2021 and 2022.

Anyone who knows Shaun will agree he is fun, down to earth and easy-going, but also extremely professional when he needs to be. He’s always happy to take advice, suggestions, and learn to improve his craft.
